The main research areas of the Institute of Computer Science are mathematical and logical foundations of computer science, computational methods, neurocomputing, softcomputing, machine learning, data–mining, mathematical modelling of complex processes, and bioinformatics. The research is realized in international collaboration which includes joint projects, organization of international conferences and memberships of its scientists in editorial boards of prestigious journals, program committees of major international conferences of the field and various scientific and advisory committees. The Institute participates at postgraduate education of PhD students in collaboration with several universities. Applications of results of basic results to information technologies, ecology, medicine are realized in collaboration with both public and private institutions.

Institute of Computer Science is major Czech research institution focused on both basic and applied research in the area of informatics. The Institute has all necessary facilities for basic research (hardware and software equipment, lecture rooms, library).
